Finding Finger Foods

I heard the alliterative Nashville indie pop band Finger Foods on The Blue Room’s Instagram account this week, and their sound grabbed me. Their most recent single, “Combo Amp,” perfectly balances heart-on-your-sleeve power indie pop and front-porch banjo picking. It’s like Fountains of Wayne performing in a field, or Alex G in overalls.

According to Finger Foods’ Levi Carter, the song’s sound evolved over time: “When we originally recorded it, it sounded a lot different. The song is called ‘Combo Amp’ so we had a ton of loud electric guitars on it and heavy distortion. It was a cool sound but it kind of felt like we lost the plot a bit haha. We whipped most of the song and started from scratch and put a harmonica and banjo on it and made it a lot simpler. That’s the sound we ended up going with.”

It seems like they made the right call.

Keep an eye out for the full album, Detroit, which drops at midnight, I believe, and go catch their release show at The Blue Room on January 24.
