Listen To The Rolofs
All I really know about The Rolofs is that they hail from Hattiesburg, Mississippi — and that might be a good thing. These fellas haven’t saturated the online landscape with photo dumps, lengthy essays about what their songs are “really about,” or slick bands photos. No, there’s basically zero info about The Rolofs aside from a single band photo on Instagram and a seven-song EP on Bandcamp. I love it.
The Rolofs
Some might call their music garage rock, but I’m going to offer an alternative: living room rock. Something along the lines of three college students in a duplex shoehorning their instruments and amps next to a second-hand couch and a coffee table littered with Miller Lite cans… Can you picture it?
It’s quintessential mid-fi domestic college rock that features absolutely no frills. Are they creating mind-bending tunes? Not really. But they are capturing a feeling, a mood. Just three guys taking an earnest swing at writing and recording songs, and, honestly, nailing it.
The opening track, “Look at your vinyl,” brought me back to an excellent Austin, Texas, band, The Zoltars. It’s all wrapped up in the production, the mix, the singing — it’s dusty and specific, and it works.
The rest of the songs are solid backyard BBQ music (with a few slightly excessive, yet enjoyable, lead parts). Give these guys a listen, and go show them some love on Bandcamp. They’ve got something going on down in Hattiesburg.
