Out On The Eaves Finds The Sadness
Over the past couple months, I’ve had a few people hit me up and suggest I check out Memphis-based songwriter Patrick Carey (aka Out on the Eaves) and his new record titled With No Reflection. Then, recently, I saw some Memphis friends post about and laud his album release show with Bonnie Prince Billie — so, I took it as a sign to sit back and listen to some of the songs.
It’s a well-crafted and thoughtful record, and a handful of the tracks did resonate with me. But one in particular stood out: “I’ll at Ease.”
Melodically and sonically, the tune is pretty aligned with the other nine tracks —that said, it feels more settled and sad. It’s a relatable mood-setter for anyone who is balancing personal despair and, at the same time, appreciation for a caretaker. It’s very much in the vein of the powerful — and profoundly depressing — Eels record Electro-Shock Blues.
Spend some time with the record and see what sticks with you.
