Touch Girl Apple Blossom Soars
While listening to Austin-based Touch Girl Apple Blossom’s “The Springtime Reminds Me Of…” I was transported back to a very specific time in indie rock history. Think somewhere between 2006-2012…
It was a period when Pitchfork could quickly break a band and groups like Vivian Girls, Seapony, and Real Estate were prioritizing melodies and reverb. Put more simply, it was an era of good under-the-radar indie pop music with a few intentional bumps and bruises.
Touch Girl Apple Blossom’s sound feels both of that moment and current. The melodies are familiar, but there’s also a jangly, country-tinged hopefulness. The hopefulness might just be feeling, though. At the conclusion of “The Springtime…” everything drops out except for singer Olivia Garner and the rhythm guitar. She then repeats the opening lines of the chorus — “Time moves slow, since I let you go” — and it’s clear that though the song may soar, it’s still navigating an overcast sky.
If you’re in Birmingham, you can catch Touch Girl Apple Blossom at Saturn on Thursday night with another excellent band, Good Flying Birds.
