Journey Into Outer World
Tracy Wilson’s band Dahlia Seed made a major impact on indie and post-hardcore music in the 90s. So much so that Numero Group is now giving the legendary band a deserved reintroduction through an upcoming reissue. My knowledge of all of this is limited, so I’ll leave it to the true Numero-heads to unpack the history and meaning wrapped up with Dahlia Seed. Regardless of the deeper context, I’m always a fan of a band getting a chance to connect with new listeners decades after they called it quits.
And Wilson’s finding new audiences elsewhere, too, with her band Outer World. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, the band just announced they’re playing this year’s Goner Fest and released a single titled, “La Dimora.”
It’s menacing pop music with subtle surfy touches. The bass line drives the song while unexpected guitar pops and synth waves glue the whole thing together.
Wilson’s voice sounds strong as ever — but there is a slightly more ethereal element to her delivery on this track. Softer edges and more “ooohs” and “ahhhs”. It’s nice.
It’s a short tune with minimal melodies, but it’ll stick with you.
