Short Takes: June 2025

Omni - “Forever Beginner”

Atlanta-based Omni add another stellar angular pop tune to their catalog with the new single, “Forever Beginner.” As usual, Frankie Boyles’ skittering guitar lines propel the song, while Philip Frobos’ vocals evoke a keen social critic. Frobos’ persona plays out spectacularly when he sets his sights on an unnamed “forever beginner” and notes they are “[p]laying dumb just to be kind.” Pretty relatable. “Forever Beginner” does not mark a bold new frontier in Omni’s sound, but it does reflect a growing confidence in the band’s delivery (both instrumentally and vocally).

Holly Waxwing & Isleapple - “Softshell”

Although based in Rhode Island, Holly Waxwing & Isleapple got their start in Central Alabama, so I still view them as adjacent to the Southeast. In their new single, “Softshell,” they cast aural brush strokes that orient the listener in a landscape filled with unpredictable scales, textures, and instrumental glimmers. It can be both meditative and startling, a perfect companion for a hike or bike ride.

Teethe - “Holy Water”

This one has been out for a minute, but I keep revisiting it. At times, Teethe’s “Holy Water” follows a tried and true alt rock structure—whispery vocals on the verse followed by massive guitar crashes in the chorus. Some might see it as predictable, others will find it endearing. Altogether, it’s a brash, shoegazy tune that invites moody head-nodding. Their last album, “Teethe,” was a bit restrained, while “Holy Water” allows them to open up the faucet a bit more. Keep it coming.
